How to Let Friends Join Your Minecraft Server
Every scenario covered: LAN play, home hosting with port forwarding, CGNAT workarounds, hosting with a stable address, Bedrock crossplay via Geyser, and connection troubleshooting.
The server runs, the world looks great, and your friend is stuck on Connecting to server? Relax: almost every join failure comes down to the same handful of causes with quick fixes. This article covers every scenario from LAN parties to cross-country public servers.
Scenario 1: Same WiFi (LAN)
Minecraft auto-detects worlds opened via Open to LAN. If it does not appear, note the port shown when the world opened, then connect manually to your-ip:port (find your IP with ipconfig on Windows). Done, no public internet needed.
Scenario 2: Home hosting with a public IP
Friends outside your network need your public IP plus port forwarding: open the router and forward port 25565 (TCP) to the host PC local IP. The catch: many ISPs hand out CGNAT (shared IP), so port forwarding silently never works. Compare whatismyip with the WAN IP shown in the router; if they differ, you are behind CGNAT and need alternatives: a tunnel like playit.gg, a VPN with port forwarding, or actual hosting.
Scenario 3: Hosting (drama-free)
With hosting, the server has a stable public address and a known port: friends just add the server. No port forwarding, no CGNAT, your PC can sleep. This is why serious community servers eventually all move to hosting: uptime and latency you can promise.
Scenario 4: Bedrock players joining?
Phone/console (Bedrock) players cannot join Java directly, but the Geyser-Spigot plugin bridges them on a Java server. Install Geyser + Floodgate and Bedrock players appear without a Java account. Crossplay like this is standard on modern servers.
Common join failures checklist
- Version mismatch: client 1.21.4 cannot enter a 1.21.1 server without ViaVersion.
- Online mode: if online-mode=true, non-premium clients are always rejected.
- Wrong IP typed, or a local IP used when connecting remotely.
- Firewall: VPS/panel firewall has not opened the port.
- Whitelist active: enable-whitelist=true rejects anyone unlisted.
- Proxy issues: with Velocity/BungeeCord, forwarding and backend firewall must be correct.
Bonus: make the address pretty
Instead of sharing a numeric IP, point a subdomain like play.yourserver.com at the IP with an A record, plus an SRV record when the port is not 25565. The Arqonara panel includes DNS guides, and our support team will check your records one by one.
If scenario 2 describes you and the CGNAT fight is getting old, hosting is the cheapest exit: Arqonara plans start at IDR 24k/month with a live server address included. Deploy now at arqonara.com/en/games or get hands-on help at discord.gg/arqonara.
