How to Install a Modpack on Your Minecraft Server (CurseForge & Modrinth)

The complete tutorial: RAM planning, Forge/Fabric install, uploading mods, and troubleshooting startup crashes for modded servers.

Playing a modpack with friends on your own server is Minecraft at its best: automation everywhere, long quest books, and a world that grows together. But one wrong step and the server crashes on startup. Follow this order and your modpack lives on the first try.

Know your modpack type

Forge packs (ATM, Better MC Forge) need a Forge server. Fabric packs need Fabric. Modrinth and CurseForge always list the loader and Minecraft version on the pack page. Write both down before anything else, because everything depends on them.

Step 1: Budget your RAM honestly

Rules of thumb:

  • Light pack (20-40 mods): 4 GB is fine
  • Medium (100+ mods): 6-8 GB
  • Kitchen-sink giants like All The Mods 9: comfortable at 10-12 GB

Too little RAM does not hard-crash; it causes GC storms: periodic TPS collapse and logs flooded with clearing memory. If your plan can upgrade RAM, raise it before debugging anything else.

Step 2: Use the pack official installer

Never assemble mods by hand. Nearly every popular modpack ships an official server pack: the server jar, mods folder, config, and scripts already tested together. On CurseForge it lives under Additional Files > Server Pack; on Modrinth check the versions tab. The Forge/Fabric installer sets up the rest.

Step 3: Upload and launch

Extract the server pack into the server root directory, run it once to generate eula.txt, accept with eula=true, then start. The first boot is slow: Forge reads hundreds of jars and mixins. Give it time, watch the console, and do not panic before the process actually finishes.

Step 4: Match client versions

The most common failure after a successful server: players running different mod or loader versions. Share the exact same instance (export a launcher profile or point everyone to CurseForge app). One mod version off can cause kick loops.

Quick troubleshooting

  • Crash on startup: read the very bottom of the crash report; 90 percent of the time it names the exact mod.
  • Missing mods error: duplicate or mixed-version mods; clean the mods folder and use the official modlist.
  • Out of memory: add RAM or trim mods.
  • Lag while exploring: pre-generate the world with Chunky before players go base hunting.

Heavy modpacks need strong single-core speed, not just lots of RAM. Our NaraSingular nodes run Ryzen 9 9950X3D, born for exactly this load. Check modpack-ready plans at arqonara.com, or ask us about your RAM needs at discord.gg/arqonara.
