Setting RAM Allocation for Players
Why adding RAM doesn't always fix lag, and how to read the numbers.
RAM matters, but it is not the only factor. Understand the pattern before adding more.
Rough Minecraft math
- Vanilla — ~1 GB for the system + ~50–100 MB per active player.
- Plugins — add 0.5–1 GB for core plugins.
- Modpacks — start at 6–8 GB, scaling with the number of mods.
Reading the panel graph
- RAM keeps climbing, never falls — likely a memory leak, schedule restarts.
- RAM often pinned — add RAM or reduce load (entities, view-distance).
- CPU at 100% but RAM free — the bottleneck is CPU, not RAM.
If the CPU is saturated, adding RAM won't help. You need a plan with a stronger CPU.
Don't over-allocate
Giving a server far more RAM than it uses can slow garbage collection. Size it appropriately, not just large.
