7 Ways to Fix Lag and TPS Drops on Your Minecraft Server

Server feeling slow? These are the fixes that actually work: Aikar flags, chunk pre-generation, pregeneration, and picking CPUs built for stable TPS.

Lag is the number one server killer. Players forgive ugly textures; they do not forgive TPS drops during mob raids or when a giant redstone contraption fires. Good news: most lag causes have clear, ordered fixes. Start at number 1 and stop when TPS is healthy.

1. Measure first, never guess

Run /tps and /timings on (or spark: /spark profiler start then stop after a few minutes). Healthy numbers: TPS 19-20 and MSPT under 50. Spark even names the plugin or mod eating tick time. Without data, optimization is coin-flipping.

2. Pre-generate the world with Chunky

The biggest lag cost is generating brand-new chunks: players exploring untouched land force the server to render terrain while running gameplay. Install Chunky, generate your play radius while the server is quiet, and forget about it. This single step removes half of all SMP lag complaints.

3. Sane view-distance and simulation-distance

view-distance 10 is generous; drop to 8 if still heavy. simulation-distance 5-6 is plenty for mob spawning and crop growth. Each block of view distance adds hundreds of chunks to send and tick. Cheapest setting with the biggest win in server.properties.

4. Clean up entities and items

Items scattered across AFK farms, mobs piling in dark-room spawners, collector armor stands: every one is counted each tick. Add ClearLag or item merge radius, cap long hopper chains (hoppers are tick monsters), and tune spawn rates in paper-world-defaults.yml for your server size.

5. Optimize your plugins

Claim and economy plugins are usually innocent, but last-gen anti-cheats and teleport plugins with every-tick tasks eat MSPT fast. Disable non-essential plugins one at a time while watching spark: it reveals the culprit faster than any forum thread.

6. Use Aikar JVM flags

Default java flags waste garbage-collector performance. Aikar G1GC flags cut micro-freezes during memory cleanup. Every Arqonara server can set these in the Startup panel, and our free generator builds them automatically for your RAM size: arqonara.com/en/minecraft-server-tools/flags.

7. If everything is clean and still heavy: the hardware

TPS is single-core work. A busy world with 30+ players, big redstone, and entity farms wants high clock speed and large cache, not just many cores. At this point moving to a Ryzen 9 9950X3D node delivers a jump no software tweak can match.
